How Chatiw works, step by step.

The moment Chatiw opens, it quietly creates a guest session for you. There is no sign-up screen and no email to confirm. That guest session is what holds your nickname, your free matches and anything you buy, for as long as you use the same browser.

If you later want the same account on a second phone or laptop, you link it to a sign-in method. Until then, nothing is required of you. The Chatiw login page covers when that is worth doing.

Every match starts with a choice. Text keeps camera and mic off; voice turns the mic on; video turns on both. Text never asks your browser for permissions, while voice and video ask once the first time you use them.

The mode holds for the whole match. If you want to try another one, finish the chat and start a new match in the other mode. Voice and video have their own page: Chatiw video chat.

After you press start, Chatiw scans for another person queued in the same mode right then. There are no rooms, no lobbies and no audience. It is always two people: you and one stranger.

Matching is random. You cannot pick a country, gender or age, and nobody can pick you. Busy hours, like evenings in the US and Europe, mean shorter waits.

From the first hello, you set the pace. Keep going as long as it is good. When it fades, tap next; the conversation closes on both screens and the search starts over. Nobody is owed an explanation.

On voice and video matches, a countdown and a notice appear before coins would be used, so you always know when the free part is ending and can choose to stop or carry on.

If a stranger turns out to be good company, follow them during the match. That puts them in your list, where you can send messages later and see your chat history with them. You can also start a private voice or video call with someone you follow, instead of hoping the random queue brings them back.

Private calls use coins. Messages and your history stay in your account, which is why the privacy policy lists them among the things Chatiw keeps.

Every new account comes with a few free matches. Then there is the Reward Center, perched above the match screen, which charges up while you stay online and pays out extra free matches a few times each day. When those run out, coins cover extra matches and private calls.

Every chat has report and block. Report sends the account to a reviewer, who checks it against the community guidelines. Block keeps that person out of your future matches. You can do both, and you should if someone crosses a line.

You open Chatiw on your phone during a break. The page loads straight to the start screen; there is nothing to fill in. You leave it on text and press start. Within moments, a stranger says hello and asks where you are. You talk about the weather where each of you lives, then they have to go, and you tap next.

The second match is quiet, so you move on after a minute. The third is fun enough that you follow them before saying goodbye. On the way out you notice the Reward Center at the top has filled a little while you chatted. That is the whole loop: pick, start, talk, next, and sometimes a follow worth coming back to.
